We currently have 24 dogs in our care. Some dogs are available for adoption and some are permanent sanctuary dogs due to either palliative needs or special needs.
Thank you for believing in our mission and making it possible for us to financially care for so many dogs at once. For an organization that has only been around for a little over three years, it hasn’t been an easy task. We couldn’t do it without our dedicated followers.
Green Heart Rescue’s mission is to provide sanctuary for at-risk senior dogs, dogs with special needs including palliative needs. Our focus is to improve their quality of life through integrating a holistic approach with proper medical care for every dog we rescue. Our goal is to make sure that the rest of their life includes comfort, peace, proper nutrition, and medical care.
Keira Update:
Keira joined our rescue in February 2021 from an overcrowded Utah shelter. She was on limited time, only available to rescue, with less than 24 hours to be saved.
Thanks to one of our regular foster families, we were able to pull Keira from the shelter. At the time, we knew she had a complicated past as far as behavior. Once she was with us, we quickly discovered that her reactivity towards other dogs and new people was extreme (to a dangerous level if she were in the wrong hands) . Since then, her amazing foster family has faithfully been working with Keira, which has not been easy and has been a very slow process.
At Green Heart Rescue, our mission is to improve quality of life for all of our dogs, as much as we possibly can. We take quality of life very seriously and make sure all of our decisions are the best for our dogs. Quality of life is as much related to behavioral concerns as it is to physical concerns. When Keira first arrived, her mental state was seriously affecting her quality of life. It didn’t take much for her to negatively react to anything that scared her.
Keira still has a long way to go, but her foster family has made remarkable progress with Keira. So far, pharmaceutical intervention and virtual training with a certified veterinarian behaviorist from the Animal Behavior Clinic in Portland have provided a steady foundation for Keira.
Our next step is to schedule Keira for 5-6 weeks of training at Instinct Dog Training in Portland. Keira’s certified veterinarian behaviorist highly recommended the additional training for Keira. However, it is costly, $525 for 5-6 weeks. We are certain it will play a significant role in continuing to improve Keira’s quality of life, but we need the support of our rescue village. 💚Adoption Alert💚
Princess has been adopted!!!
Princess joined our rescue over the summer after she was seized by animal control from a very sad situation. Our wonderful friends at @idahodogpark let Princess stay at their facility while we worked on finding a foster home or an adopter for her.
It took some time, but through networking, one of our followers shared our post that caught the attention of a potential foster.
After a meet & greet, the potential foster turned into an adopter 💚💚💚 Princess was officially adopted in September 2021!
She went from being confined to a trailer (never able to go outside) to living the life of luxury with a family that is madly in love with her.
Princess’s new family writes:
“I just wanted you to know that she is doing fantastic. The kids have renamed her Ruby. Princess Ruby officially. LOL. She gets daily walks and is doing much better on the leash. Her and my husband have bonded something I think they both needed. Thank you again for bringing this wonderful creature into our lives.”

Lala is looking for her forever home!
Little Lala is a petite 6 year old female chihuahua mix. She is a playful girl, full of personality She LOVES to play fetch despite her diagnosis of intervertebral disc disease (IVDD).
Her spinal condition has led to full incontinence, requiring her to wear a diaper. She is currently on pain medication because she has exhibited signs of pain in her back legs (related to IVDD).
Lala joined our rescue in April 2021. She is pending a medical evaluation with our vet to see how we can help minimize her IVDD pain. It’s likely we will move forward with regular laser therapy and acupuncture.
Lala’s adopter will need to have the means to manage her ongoing medical needs to help her remain pain-free as well as patience to help with Lala’s incontinence.
Lala’s special needs make her extra special. She makes it easy to love her! She is good with other dogs but can be a bit bossy when it comes to play time. She can be a bit feisty with cats and would do best in a home without small children (because of her spinal condition, she will need dog savvy children that are gentle and patient with her). Lala is very passionate about playing fetch which means she can be a bit, ahem, intense if another dog in the house also has the same passion💚🐾

💚 Jilly Bean is looking for her forever home. This sweet girl can best be described as quiet and dignified. She loves her human companions and is content just lounging on a comfortable bed near them. We think Jilly Bean is at least 8 years old & is a blind yellow lab/heeler mix.
An ideal home for Jilly will be low-energy with plenty of room to roam. Patience will be needed because she is still working on confidence when on a leash and when learning new environments.
On Jilly Bean’s wish list is a home free of cats and little dogs though she seems to be good with calm dogs her size but definitely needs her own space.

💚Adoption Alert💚
In May 2021, our rescue partners @underdograilroadtransport alerted us to a bonded pair of dogs stuck in an overcrowded California shelter. There was a good chance they would be separated to increase their chance of rescue.
The second we were alerted about their desperate need for rescue, we began networking for a foster family.
Amazingly, we found someone willing to foster both dogs! Toby (large dog) and Mervyn found their golden ticket thanks to amazing team work between @stocktonanimalshelter @underdograilroadtransport and a new GHR foster family.
Toby was extremely fearful when we first rescued him. His dependency on little Mervyn was immediately noticeable. It’s wonderful that neither dog has to go through any more changes because their foster mom has decided to adopt them!
Congratulations to Toby, Mervyn and their new mom! Many thanks to all involved for the amazing team work to save two very important lives. 💚

We have a bitter sweet update about our sweet super senior, Lola.
Lola joined our rescue in June 2021. Lola was saved by our rescue partners @dallaspetsalive. They pulled her from an overcrowded shelter in Texas. Shortly after Lola arrived in Idaho, we knew she would be one of our permanent hospice dogs.
Fortunately, a loving family stepped up to foster Lola. Even though the plan was for Lola to spend the rest of her life with her foster family as a GHR hospice dog, her foster family wanted to officially adopt her.
Lola, also called Curly Sue, finally found her family...a family that loved her the second she walked into their home. Sadly, a few weeks ago, Lola passed in her sleep.
Although it’s never easy to say goodbye, Lola knew what love was during her final months. We are so grateful to Lola’s family for being there for her and letting her experience a life with a loving family.
Rest In Peace, Curly Sue.

We have a bitter sweet update about our sweet super senior, Lola.
